NATO Awards SES $200M Contract for Advanced Secure Satellite Communications

Under a multi-year agreement, Luxembourg-based satellite operator SES has secured a contract from the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) to deliver advanced, secure satellite communication services to NATO member governments. The contract will utilize SES's medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite network, ensuring high-performance, low-latency connectivity to support NATO's global operations.

The award, known as MEO Global Services (MGS), is structured as a three-year Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract valued at $200 million, with an option for two additional one-year extensions. This is the first contract awarded under the Global Commercially Contracted Satellite Communications Support Partnership (GCC SATCOM SP), a collaborative initiative established by the U.S. and Luxembourg in 2022 under NSPA’s guidance. The partnership marks a significant milestone in NATO's space capabilities, enhancing cooperation between allied nations.

The MGS contract will be available to all NATO member countries, including the U.S. and Luxembourg, the founding members of the agreement. It will support missions through SES’s commercial managed services network and new national sovereign communication networks, which will be deployed for O3b mPOWER services as part of this agreement.

The O3b mPOWER system is SES’s next-generation MEO constellation, featuring a robust global infrastructure and an open-architecture design. It provides unprecedented levels of flexibility, interoperability, and control, allowing governments to implement secure communications solutions, even in tactical scenarios.

Yuriko Backes, Luxembourg’s Minister of Defence, praised the collaboration, stating, "Luxembourg has developed considerable expertise in satellite communications, and we are proud to contribute to NATO and its partners. This contract aligns with Luxembourg’s Defence Space Strategy and utilizes SES’s cutting-edge O3b mPOWER network to advance government communications and enable sovereign networks."

NSPA General Manager Stacy Cummings highlighted the importance of the contract, saying, "This initiative accelerates access to state-of-the-art satellite technology for governments. It shows how collaborative efforts between governments and industry, combined with dual-use technology, strengthen global defense and security. As more nations join the GCC SATCOM SP, they too will benefit from secure communications and coalition operations."

Adel Al-Saleh, CEO of SES, expressed the company’s commitment to providing secure and reliable communications to NATO countries. “We designed O3b mPOWER to meet the critical connectivity needs of government missions and have been closely working with NATO nations to deliver the performance and security they require. It’s a privilege to launch this service for governments, including the U.S. and Luxembourg.”

The MGS initiative represents a groundbreaking step in NATO's efforts to leverage commercial satellite technology for defense, enhancing communication capabilities across the alliance.

It is anticipated that the implementation of SES's satellite technology through the O3b mPOWER system will not only significantly enhance NATO's communication capabilities but also lay the groundwork for further integration of space technologies into military and civilian operations. This could serve as a catalyst for broader collaboration among alliance members, improving collective defense and response times to global security challenges.
